A call comes in, a plumber runs a camera down the line, and only then does a number get written down. That order barely changes whether the address is a cottage on a quiet side street or a unit three floors up near the platform.

This suburb reads like two places stitched together. Apartment towers have grown up thick around the station in recent years, part of a building wave that followed the rail line rather than the older street grid.

Two very different streets end up needing two very different jobs. A root-choked line on the older side is usually a blocked drain repair matter, backed up by drain cleaning to keep it that way, whereas a surcharging line near the towers calls for blocked stormwater work.

Two problems turn up again and again once the tree-root and stormwater picture is set aside.

1. Brittle old drainage. Homes built before the war were plumbed with earthenware pipe that turns brittle with age, and the cracked joints it leaves behind give roots an easy way in.
2. A hard fall to the bottom. Sitting up on the ridge, the blocks here send runoff downhill fast, and the drainage runs at the low end of that fall cop the pressure first, surcharging and blocking well before the ones higher up.

Neither problem announces itself early. Telling the two apart usually needs a proper look with the camera, rather than guessing and clearing the wrong section twice.
